And the winners are…

Eight social change-makers have been announced winners at the 2018 Third Sector Awards, an annual awards celebrating the leadership and innovation in to the not for profit sector.

The winners of the Third Sector Awards, presented by Spark Strategy, were revealed at a ceremony at the Maritime Museum in Sydney on 25 September.

Third Sector, in partnership with the Centre for Social Impact and a team of judges, scored a large volume of entries across multiple categories to showcase the very best in the sector. The winners represented the rich variety of Australia’s not-for-profit world, from health and wellbeing to advocacy.

There were eight awards categories featured at the night, with each category highlighting the direction of the NFP sector and the innovation required for the sector to not only remain relevant but in existence.

The winners are:

Influencer of the Year – Judge’s Choice:

Brendan Lonergan – Beehive Industries Cooperative

Board Director of the Year presented by Akolade:
Greg Nairn – Dandelion Support Network (DSN)

Volunteer of the Year presented by HotlineIT:
Sally Hetherington – Human and Hope Association Incorporated

Social Entrepreneur of the Year presented by Alphasys:
Josh Ross and Adam McCurdie – Humanitix

Campaign / Marketing Executive of the Year presented by Fifty Acres:

Young Leader of the Year presented by Woolworths:
Jobeth Winton – Mirima Dawang Woorlab-gerring Language and Culture Centre

Emerging Leader of the Year presented by CSNET:

Sarah Walker – Momentum Collective (Formerly Third Sector Australia)

Brendan Lonergan, CEO of Beehive industries Co-Operative, was very humbled by winning the CEO of the Year category. The organisation has gone through many challenges in the past years to get to where it is today, and Lonergan emphasised the importance of NFPs collaborating with each other, to help promote the concept of supporting NFP’s and make the pie of support much bigger.

“It gets people into the mindset of giving and doing good,” Lonergan said.

The ceremony was held in conjunction with Third Sector Live – an annual conference for leaders and decision makers in the not-for-profit sector. This year’s sessions focused on the latest trends and best practice in leadership and workforce, technology, marketing and branding – all through the lens of collaborations.

The speaker lineup for the two-day event included names like Shadow Minister for Charities and Not-for-Profits, Dr Andrew Leigh, Commissioner of the Australian Charities and Not-for-profit Commission, Dr Gary Johns, National Aids Trust UK’s CEO Deborah Gold, Centre for Social Impact’s CEO Professor Kristy Muir and Martin Laverty, CEO of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
